Why Building An Online Business Is So Good
If you do not yet own an online business, or have just started, then this article should help motivate you to continue working towards success. I really believe that everyone should give internet marketing a go. Internet marketing is very cheap to start up compared to bricks and motor businesses, and can offer many rewards, both financial and in terms of lifestyle.
If I remember correctly, I set up my first website for 25 pounds, and never spent a penny in advertising or marketing. This website went on to earn me a good part time wage, and gave me a solid foundation to build other sites on. The only amount of risk I faced was losing my 25 pounds. Unlike many bricks and mortar businesses, I did not risk losing my house if my business failed.
As I was relatively inexperienced in business, this provided a great deal of breathing space. I did not need to turn over a vast amount of money just to break even. Virtually anything I earned was pure profit, so I had nothing to lose.
I have been earning from the internet since February 2007. At first I was just earning a bit of extra cash to subsidise the income from my job. By August 2008 I was earning enough to move abroad to Morocco to live a cheap but comfortable life with just my internet earnings. By January 2010 I returned to England with enough internet earnings to live comfortably in a more expensive economy.
The beginning was difficult as I had 2 jobs, plus I was regularly playing at weekends as a musician. Finding time to work on my online businesses was not easy at first, but I just knuckled down and got on with it. I was earning probably just a handful of dollars a week, despite putting any bit of spare time I had into it. This will happen to you. You will need to work hard for little, if any, financial reward for several months, and you may have to keep your regular job for quite a while. You are doing very well if you earn anything of any significance in the first year. The trick though is to keep plugging along. Keep building your business, your knowledge and your experience.
Eventually you can be earning a good enough income to quit your day job. This is great because once you are in this position, you can work the hours that suit you, and put even more energy into your business, helping you to yield even more profits. If you want a day off to go to the beach, it’s up to you. You don’t need to go and ask someone’s permission if you can enjoy a day with your family. You are the master of your own destiny.
Also I would say that I now enjoy greater job security. I no longer rely on someone else to run a business which employs me. Matters are now firmly in my hands. If my sales go down, I know about it and can deal with it. I am not relying on someone elses decision making process over my livelihood.
Even if you don’t decide to quit your job, the extra cash you will earn will really help improve your lifestyle. Even just a few hundred a month can make a massive difference.
I would say though, I am definitely glad I managed to earn enough to quit my day job. Instead I now enjoy revenue from many difference sources. If one dries up, the others can carry me through. I can continue adding more revenue streams as time goes by, continually strengthening my position. With a job, once you are fired, made redundant, or quit, you have nothing.
And your bosses are only too aware of this. They know that you are being paid just enough to live, so that if you should lose your job, you are in dire straits very quickly. They know they have a power grip over you, and often use this to their advantage.
I like the concept of building something that improves over time. With a job you work, then get paid. If you can’t work for some reason, illness, injury, old age etc. then your income stops. With internet businesses, you can earn money when asleep or on holiday. I could take 6 months off to travel and whilst I wouldn’t necessarily be developing and growing my businesses, I would still be earning money on autopilot. If I really wanted to I could take a laptop with me and still work from almost anywhere in the world.
To me owning an internet businesses is the ultimate freedom. I can work when I want and from where I want. At home, abroad, in my garden. No one puts a cap on my earnings, so the sky’s the limit. I can earn enough to put some cash aside should things go against me for a while. Most jobs pay little more than is required to survive.
I do have to say that although I passionately advocate everyone earning online, it is isn’t for everyone. Some people do struggle motivating themselves to work. They can work when someone else (a boss) tells them to, but not under their own steam. This is a shame because these people are doomed to work for someone’s profits for the rest of their lives, and might never experience the liberating feeling of owning their own business.
The problem is that most of us are not used to working under our own steam. We spend years in education being told what to do. Then we go to work and the same thing happens in the vast majority of jobs. Most of us just haven’t had the opportunity to develop our self motivating skills. Techniques such as timeboxing can really help.
Luckily they can be developed. Like any other skill you can improve your self motivation skills. Just set yourself small goals and follow through with them. Start small. It might at first be to write a 500 word article in 2 hours. Once you get used to this type of thing, you can start increasing the amount of work you can motivate yourself to do. If it helps, you can view yourself as your own boss, and give yourself a “to do list” at the start of every day. Wouldn’t you rather be your own boss than let someone else do it?
I liken an internet business to building a well. It is passive income. Rather than walk several miles for some water to sell to someone, you can build a well. It may cost you some time and money to build this well, but once it is built, you can charge people to enjoy the water, which is far more time efficient than walking miles every day for it. You can enjoy easy income from your past efforts. And when you have one well working and earning you money, there’s nothing stopping you from building many more.

The important thing is to take action. Many people talk about doing these things, but never seem to get round to it. They usually blame being too busy. Whilst it can be difficult when working full time. It is by no means impossible. I managed it. Even if you set yourself just one hour per day, you can make great gains. Once you see the money rolling in, you can then up the time you set yourself.
Like I say, don’t make excuses, just do the best you can. I promise, if you keep on fighting, the rewards are well worth it.
