If you run your own affiliate programme then this is great. You can get your product out there to more people, as you have a recruitment of other sellers spreading the word. However your initial excitement can turn to disappointment when no one actually signs up. Luckily there are many things you can do to attract more affiliate marketers to your programme.
I asked several successful affiliate owners/managers how they attract people to their programme. Here are some great responses I received.
I have also written an article How To Attract Way More Affiliates To Sell Your Products that will give you loads of additional tried and tested tactics to help increase your affiliates.

Our best strategy to attract new affiliates is knowing what our competitors
are offering and offering the same, if not more for our affiliates. The
affiliates who run industry related blogs or sites get bonus commissions,
longer cookies and exclusive coupons and offers because it is those
affiliates who send us higher quality, converting traffic. I would
recommend to anyone who has an affiliate program to treat your best
performers and those who run websites / blogs in complimentary industries to
offer them incentives better than your standard affiliates because those are
the affiliates who will boost your sales the most – more than coupon sites,
discount sites and sites outside of your industry.

Probably the best way to attract new publishers is by offering them
something of value. For example, if you are working for a company that
organises cruise ship holidays, then reward your best performing
affiliate partner with a free holiday. Make sure to advertise the offer
well on the affiliate marketing site you work with. This can be done by
writing an article / post about the offer on their website as well as on
affiliate forums and your own site so that you get the exposure needed.
Of course, this example would be extreme for small or medium sized
corporations, but offering your publishers something of value is a great
way to attract new advertising partners. Your best-selling publisher is
of great value to you so there is nothing wrong with expressing your
gratitude to them. One simple way of doing this is to offer tiered
commission rates for high and low performers.
For our client Paycare, a leading
not-for-profit healthcare insurance company in the United Kingdom, we
paid disproportionately higher commissions to partners whose ads led to
the purchase of higher value or longer term cash plan.
The difference between a failing or successful affiliate program can
very well be the amount of exposure it receives. Make sure your company
advertises the program well using all avenues available, including your
own website, the affiliate provider’s site, all forums and networks you
actively participate in and social media channels such as Twitter,
Facebook and Google plus. To build recognition of your affiliate program
and win publisher attention you can also push official press releases.
Remember that exposure is essential to attract new publishers to a new
affiliate program. If people don’t know your program exists, they will
not join it. Finally, you can use affiliate forums to gain partners and
also ask such sites to include you in their newsletter.

You may have designed a great affiliate program -but without any exposure,
your program will be worthless. In order to attract affiliates and run a
successful affiliate program, your program needs to be *findable*. Try
using a 3rd party affiliate management platform that already has a wealth
of affiliates within their network. Commission Junction, ShareASale,
ClickBank, and LinkShare are a few popular platforms. This will ensure that
your program will be publicly listed and in front of a large community of
Beyond just getting your program out there, you want to make sure that your
program is attractive enough to join. If you are just starting out, one way
that I have found to be very successful is to offer kick-off commissions.
Inflate your commission rates for the first 6 months to a year after the
launch so that affiliates are inclined to join and are motivated to take
advantage of these high commission rates. Another way to do it is to offer
higher commission rates for the first three months after a new affiliate
has joined. Either way, you are rewarding affiliates for joining your
program -and who doesn’t like to be rewarded?
I noticed several things you can do to attract affiliates. Here’s my
1-Create a compelling landing page on your website meant to attract
affiliates. Make this page graphically appealing and approachable. It’s
always wise to make it SEO friendly as well. By this I mean
incorporating the right keywords and information. No over optimizing of
course. Always include a call to action and what you’re willing to
offer. It’s always wise to display graphics as well.
2-Here’s a more hands on approach: Reach out to potential affiliates
through LinkedIn. As a Social Media Specialist, I always seem to get
more than I bargain for on LinkedIn. If you purchased any of their
upgrades, you’ll notice that you’ll have a feature called “in mail”.
This feature allows you to contact anyone on LinkedIn. My advice is to
find potential affiliates and introduce yourself. Be sure to be honest
and direct on your purpose. Link your landing page on your introduction
and explain what you’re all about. Tell them why you think you would be
a great team together. People appreciate that. I know I would.
3-Lastly, include a call-to-action requesting submissions on your online
newsletter or e-mail Marketing campaign.

The best way to attract affiliates to an affiliate program is to get your
company in front of the big players in the industry. Network with others and
get well known in the industry by having the heavyweights review your
Our company scored an interview with Greg Hoffman and Joe Magennis on the
Affiliate Juice Podcast back in 2011. We discussed a lot of valuable
information regarding who we are as a company and why we do what we do. In
addition, we covered what we felt were the best ways for affiliates to
promote us based on niches. At the end, Greg and Joe decided that we
definitely had “the juice.” As a result, we were able onboard a lot of good
affiliates because those who were interested in us took Greg and Joe’s
recommendation and saw the value in our program.
Last year, we also exhibited at Affiliate Summit East, where we ran a
giveaway event. By collecting contact information via the giveaway (you had
to drop a business card to enter) we were able to pick up many great
Last but not least, we also frequently comment on various affiliate blogs
and websites, such as the ABestWeb affiliate marketing forum and AM
Navigator. Helping folks and sharing knowledge and experiences on the forums
and blogs is also a great way to score affiliates who happen upon our posts.

What I’d suggest is to create an extensive list of affiliates that’s easy to
navigate (say alphabetically both by industry and by affiliate name) from a
multitude of industries that cover most consumer’s needs, so you have a few
good choices from each industry (i.e. something for everyone to cast a wider
net and make the affiliate list more enticing). Make this list easily
accessible on the referring organization’s website, albeit password
protected if it’s meant to be exclusive to a certain group of
members/employees. Also, be sure to have the promo code or discount code
prominently displayed with the description of services for that affiliate,
and instructions on how to use it. The affiliate should be giving a
referral fee to the referring organization every time the promo code is use,
and have a way of tracking every time the promo code is used. Finally, make
sure the referring organization aggressively promotes its affiliate list,
so it’s members get the most for their membership fee, and/or so their
employees get additional value for being an employee (good for employee
turnover/satisfaction/morale), and lastly so the affiliates get business,
which encourages them to continue offering a benefit.
This allows the affiliate to get their product/services out to a lot of
people at once with no upfront cost (so low risk), and require them to pay
only at the time of sale, both in a discount to the consumer and a referral
fee to the referring organization, so that organization can make money from
revenue sharing. The more affiliates signed up, so more transactions that
can potentially take place, and the more the referring organization can make
Any organization/company with lots of members or employees should be doing
this. Everyone wins when it’s done right.
